The Vikes – Who we are…
The Viking Centre & Youth Club (also known as The Vikes) has been providing facilities to the residents of Tranmere and Rock Ferry for almost 50 years. Founded in 1964 by a group of Birkenhead School ‘old boys’ and constituted as a charity in 2004, The Vikes have been able to improve conditions of life for many children and young people throughout the years by creating a safe, nurturing and engaging environment.
Since austerity cuts in 2012 Wirral Borough Council no longer support The Vikes making us entirely dependent on grants, monies from rentals and donations.
The Vikes provides social and recreational facilities to the local community. This is done through creating engaging programmes, projects and clubs. These initiatives aim to develop primarily children and young people in many areas physically, mentally and emotionally in order to give the children and young people the best opportunity to develop into well-rounded individuals and valued members of society/the community.
The Vikes – Vision for the Centre…
The Vikes has very recently had an influx of new trustees with new ideas and a renewed vision for The Vikes. This vision sees The Vikes playing a pivotal role in the community to improve the local offer of a broad range of activities for local children, young people, families and adults who are in need of support. The Vikes wants to act as a catalyst for change in an area of much needed renovation and development not only in infrastructure but also in attitude and culture.
Over the coming years The Vikes will be the go to ‘hub’ of Rock Ferry and will offer a range of support for the local community.
The Vikes ‘Centre’ currently provides opportunities in the shape of alternative education provision, youth club, majorettes, mom ball and enrichments programmes for local school children. We are looking to extend our offer much further over the coming years to improve the lives of people of Rock Ferry.
